Common mistakes with Total.js 5, with wrong and right code
Mistakes that models and people make with Total.js 5, each with the wrong code and the right code. The pairs are also published as preference data at /preferences.jsonl.
A PATCH that overwrites the fields that were not sent
A PATCH should change only the fields of the request. By default a field that is declared in input but was not sent is filled with the default of its type, and an update would store that empty value. The option partial: true keeps only the fields that were sent.
NEWACTION('Wrong/patch', {
name: 'Patch',
input: 'name:String, price:Number',
action: function($, model) {
$.callback(model);
}
});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('PATCH /wrong/patch/ --> *Wrong/patch');
};NEWACTION('Right/patch', {
name: 'Patch',
partial: true,
input: 'name:String, price:Number',
action: function($, model) {
$.callback(model);
}
});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('PATCH /right/patch/ --> *Right/patch');
};A flagged route that is never reached
Routes with flags are checked after the route without flags on the same URL. If both exist, the route without flags takes every request. Declare one route and decide in the handler.
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong/flags/', normal);
ROUTE('GET /wrong/flags/ @xhr', ajax);
};
function normal($) {
$.json({ handler: 'normal' });
}
function ajax($) {
$.json({ handler: 'ajax' });
}exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /right/flags/', answer);
};
function answer($) {
$.json({ handler: $.xhr ? 'ajax' : 'normal' });
}A route for a URL with an extension
A URL that ends with an extension, such as /report.csv, is a file request. A GET route does not match it and the request ends with a 404. Declare it with FILE.
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong-report.csv', report);
};
function report($) {
$.plain('a,b\n1,2\n');
}exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('FILE /right-report.csv', report);
};
function report($) {
$.plain('a,b\n1,2\n');
}A CRON line with a step
Write the minutes as a list: 0,15,30,45 matches exactly those minutes. The check(date) of a job tells whether a date matches, so the schedule can be tested without waiting.
var job = CRON('*/15 * * * *', function() {});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong/cron/', function($) {
$.json({ minute31: job.check(new Date(2026, 0, 5, 9, 31)) });
});
};var job = CRON('0,15,30,45 * * * *', function() {});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /right/cron/', function($) {
$.json({ minute31: job.check(new Date(2026, 0, 5, 9, 31)), minute30: job.check(new Date(2026, 0, 5, 9, 30)) });
});
};Expecting the cache option of an action to cache
Keep the answer of an action with CACHE.set() and read it with CACHE.get().
var runs = { wrong: 0 };
NEWACTION('Wrong/cached', {
name: 'Cached',
cache: { expire: '1 minute' },
action: function($) {
runs.wrong++;
$.callback({ runs: runs.wrong });
}
});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong/cache/ --> *Wrong/cached');
};var runs = { right: 0 };
NEWACTION('Right/cached', {
name: 'Cached',
action: function($) {
var cached = CACHE.get('right-cached');
if (cached)
return $.callback(cached);
runs.right++;
var value = { runs: runs.right };
CACHE.set('right-cached', value, '1 minute');
$.callback(value);
}
});
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /right/cache/ --> *Right/cached');
};Code in a folder that is not loaded
Total.js runs the files of the folders listed in the project structure page. A file in sources/ is not run, so code that has to execute at start belongs in definitions/.
(MAIN.started = MAIN.started || []).push('sources');(MAIN.started = MAIN.started || []).push('definitions');
ROUTE('GET /started/', function($) {
$.json(MAIN.started);
});Joining text to PATH.root()
PATH.root() returns the path without a trailing slash, so PATH.root() + 'tmp/a.txt' becomes /project + tmp/a.txt = /projecttmp/a.txt. Each folder has its own helper that adds the separator.
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong/path/', function($) {
$.json({ path: PATH.root() + 'tmp/a.txt' });
});
};exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /right/path/', function($) {
$.json({ path: PATH.tmp('a.txt'), root: PATH.root() });
});
};A string sent in a WebSocket route in text mode
In a route with @text the messages you receive are strings, but send(message) still encodes what it sends as JSON, so a string arrives with quotes. send(message, true) sends it as it is.
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('SOCKET /wrong/text/ @text', function() {
this.on('message', function(client, message) {
client.send('echo: ' + message);
});
});
};exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('SOCKET /right/text/ @text', function() {
this.on('message', function(client, message) {
client.send('echo: ' + message, true);
});
});
};Expecting REQUEST() to reject on an error status
REQUEST() resolves with the answer even when the status is 404 or 500. It rejects only when the request itself fails (connection refused, timeout). Check response.status.
exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /wrong/request/', async function($) {
try {
var response = await REQUEST({ url: $.hostname('/missing-page/') });
$.json({ ok: true, body: response.body.length > 0 });
} catch (e) {
$.json({ ok: false });
}
});
};exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /right/request/', async function($) {
var response = await REQUEST({ url: $.hostname('/missing-page/') });
$.json({ ok: response.status < 400, status: response.status });
});
};exports.install = function() {
ROUTE('GET /where/', function($) {
$.json({ url: $.hostname('/') });
});
